Password composition

Password Composition

Summary:

Passwords are necessary to protect access to your information in files and programs. Having an effective and organized password strategy helps to prevent others from viewing/printing, reaching, changing or deleting your confidential information. The other key danger is someone posing as yourself, making transactions- locally or remotely, on your behalf.

Purpose:
To develop a personalized approach to more secure, private & memorable passwords. To be consistent in choosing passwords that work for you.
To help avoid someone guessing your password recovery scheme in the event you loose yours.

Advice:
Typing long passwords is minimal work in comparison to a breach of your security. Any password is crack-able. Better passwords only take longer to crack reducing your exposure with each additional character- exponentially.
One of the easiest passwords for people to learn is the name or a verse from a favorite song. It does not matter in most programs, if the password is up to 128 characters long. (abet- no spaces).
Example: YesterdayAllMyTr0ublesSeemedS0FarAway.
Others demand no more than twelve (12), "D0-wa-didy" is just fine. Long passwords take longer to crack. Remember, four numbers can take under 30 seconds to crack. A mixed, longer password can take a few hours considering there are 52 lower case letters, 52 upper case letters, 10 numbers and several special characters, etc. Bad guys are usually in a hurry.

Content- Do not make it obvious. You are not the only one that knows your partner's or pet's name.
An email address can contain hints only you know in the password: johnbolton@mymail.com password J0hnB0lt0n.

Password Recovery- The secret questions you have to answer in services, like Yahoo, Goggle, are quite basic & are used in profiling you. Only answer the mandatory ones & do not reveal specifics, such as actual birth date, school, zip code, etc. It can be a very easy hack job for access to your email. See email fraud.

Methods- Structure- Use a minimum of eight characters- to create millions of possibilities.

Composition-
1.- Substitute the letter O with the number 0 (zero) and the letter Q with the number 1 or visa vera. (very hard to see the switch when typing because of their close proximity)
2.- Mix it up-Include at least two of the following: a capital letter, a number or a special/ symbol character, if allowed.
3. Types- Choose one for general internet access and a different one for system access or bank access.
General internet, such as email, like Yahoo: howareyou.
4.- Do not dream up a new password for every account you have. Be consistent, in case you forget that real important one or need to change several later. For banking, make it long and hard, such as numbers, capitals and misspellings. Example: Iwillbtheir4U

Methods
Of course, we do not write a key password down for someone to find under your keyboard or in your day timer. Though a note to yourself could read: "fav beatles" and be just enough to jog your memory.
If you need to LOG ON, please take the time to LOG OFF. Make a habit of it when taking a trip down the hall or when heading home and switching programs or web sites to CLOSE your Browser.
To be double sure, in INTERNET EXPLORER 6- clear your cache by selecting:
TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS, under General tab & Temporary Internet files, Select > Delete files > check mark "Delete all offline content" and Click "OK".
This method is critical after accessing on-line bank accounts.
Hard Drive Passwords
Be very careful since they are very difficult to recover with destroying content. Many laptops come with a password schemes that are unrecoverable and the machine will become unusable.

Clear passwords & personal info
Browsers do track your passwords & information in Auto-Complete files. It will take you longer to re-enter this info for repeat visits to the same site. It is safer to clear the passwords & your info prior actively surfing the internet.

How to?

Internet Explorer 9- Start the browser> Click TOOLS> INTERNET OPTIONS> Select the CONTENT tab, then click on > AutoComplete. Un check- Forms and Users Names and Passwords..

You can use delete Browsing History under Tools to delete prior history of passwords used and form data. We check all items except the first box Preserve Favorites. Yes, you will have to input your form data the next time you sign up for something but that is better than having your personal information hanging around in a very accessible file.

In Internet Explorer 7, select Tools> Look for Delete Password then > Delete files. This will prevent a hacker or the next person that uses your computer from accessing your email or other pass worded programs.

(Internet Explorer 6)
Start the browser> Click TOOLS> INTERNET OPTIONS> Select the CONTENT tab, then click on > AutoComplete. Clear the check marks from all four boxes. Proceed using the Internet with your user names & passwords, as required. Before
you exit your browser, click TOOLS> INTERNET OPTIONS> Select the CONTENT tab and click on > AutoComplete, then click on Clear Forms & Clear Passwords.

Do not come up with a different password every time you need one, since it is easy to loose track. It is better to change one good password at least monthly & be consistent for the whole month. If the file is important, password protect it. There are features in Work and Excel which allow you to password or stop someone from altering the contents.
Networks usually will ask for a log in with a User Name and Password, which you may have no control over. If you are concerned, speak with the system administrator in charge of granting permissions and setting up user accounts.
Do not agree with programs that offer to save your password for future access. It may take a bit longer to put it in each time but it stops yet another file on your computer or theirs from knowing your password.
